KIEV
35 A
Factory
Designation: Kiev 35 A
Identifiers:
MC Korcar 2.8/35 inscribed on the front lens ring, film
speed settings marked 25 to 800 GOST / ISO scale.
Features:
Exactly the same as the Minox 35 EL
Power
source: One 5.6V mercury battery (PX-27 or equivalent).
Remarks:
The Kiev 35A is a virtual copy of Minox 35 EL (even
the shutter release button is red). According to Dan
Richards' review in Popular Photography (Vol.58, No2,
Feb/94):
"The Kiev falls a little short on construction:
The exterior fit and finish are somewhat rough, and
the controls - aperture, focusing, shutter release -
have a sloppy, loose feel",
but the polished metal film rail was considered well
made and the Korcar lens performance exceptional, he
concludes:
"Russian/Ukranian/Eastern european photo gear
can be competent, fun, and even collectible in its own
gritty way, but don't purchase it as workhorse equipment
or the sole gear for a major vacation".
